FOR YOUR FINNISH LAPPHUND

Finnish Lapphunds are not only adorable, they’re also highly intelligent and capable working dogs.  As one of the most rewarding breeds to own and train, their gorgeous personalities and highly affectionate nature are sure to win your heart. If you’re fortunate enough to own a lappy, you’ll appreciate their unique traits and loving demeanor. Here are some advanced training tips and practical advice for experienced owners to help strengthen your bond and enhance your Finnish Lapphund's skills.

EMBRACE THEIR INDEPENDENCE

​Finnish Lapphunds were bred to work independently in the Arctic, which means they can be independent during training, at times. Each have their own differences and positive reinforcement using intuitive training is key:
  • Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward-based training is crucial. Use treats, praise, and playtime to motivate your Lappy. This method encourages them to think independently while still following your commands.
  • Intuitive methods: Actively observe your lappy's cues and use your intuition to guide them towards the behaviour you desire to build.
  • Be Patient and Consistent: Consistency is key. Use the same cues and rewards for specific behaviors. Patience is vital—if they don’t respond immediately, give them time to process.

ENGAGE THEIR MINDS
Finnish Lapphunds thrive on mental stimulation, variety in training and learning in new environments. Incorporate activities that challenge their intellect and keep training sessions regular but varied to maintain their interest:
  • Short and Engaging: Aim for 10-15 minute sessions, incorporating different activities to keep them engaged. A mix of commands, tricks, and games can prevent monotony.
  • Puzzle Toys: Use interactive toys that require problem-solving. These can keep them entertained and mentally engaged, even when you’re busy.
  • ​Scent Work: Introduce scent training to tap into their natural instincts. Hide treats around your home or yard and encourage them to find them using their nose.
  • End on a Positive Note: Always conclude training sessions with a successful command or trick, followed by lots of praise. This leaves your Lappy feeling accomplished and eager for the next session.

DEVELOP ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

Once your Lappy has mastered basic commands, it’s time to challenge them with advanced training:
  • Complex Commands: Introduce commands like “back up,” “leave it,” or “spin.” Break these commands down into smaller steps, rewarding them as they progress.
  • Build the 4 D's: Duration, distance distraction and difficulty for each skill they learn.
  • Combine Commands: Teach them to perform multiple commands in succession, such as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and then “down.” This helps build their focus and reinforces their learning.
  • Teach Targeting: teach your lappy to target any object with their nose or paw. This becomes the basis for many different dog tricks (ringing a bell to riding a skateboard!).
  • Redirecting Energy: Some lappies can have high energy levels. If your dog exhibits unwanted behaviors (like excessive barking), redirect that energy into productive activities like fetch or agility training.
  • Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries and rules. If your Lappy jumps on people or begs for food, consistently reinforce the “off” and “no” commands or redirect to a more desirable behaviour.

STRENGTHEN YOUR BOND

 Ultimately, the training process is about building trust and communication with your Lappy.
Spend quality time together outside of training and engaging in activities they love, whether it's hiking, playing at the beach, fetch or simply relaxing at home. Knowing your dog's cues and understanding their body language signals can enhance communication and make training more effective. Keep socialising regularly on playdates with other dogs and in group training classes. These activities are so important to create a well-adjusted Finnish Lapphund adult who copes well with distraction and can work anywhere, anytime and with anyone!
